October 8, 2022 - Dinosaur Ridge + Take Action
Take Action 4 + Girl Scout Way 1,2,3,5 + Bugs 1,2 + GSCO Outdoor Skills 3
Meeting Activities:
Primary badge: Take Action 4
Other badges: Girl Scout Way 1,2,3,5 + Bugs 1,2 + Outdoor Skills 3
Comments:
To complete their Outdoor Journey, girls staffed a “Take Action” booth at the popular Girl Scout Day at Dinosaur Ridge event.
They made a sustainable impact by teaching other scouts some of their favorite skills learned in completing the First Aid, Hiker, and Cabin Camper badges and the GSCO Outdoor Skills—Novice patch.
All our girls had fun working with scouts from all over the state at our booth. They also had the opportunity to explore other exhibits.
It was fun to pose for pictures under Mr. Bones and visit with the same Leave-No-Trace ladies we met in Staunton State Park.
Thanks to everyone for your support on the day, which turned out to be a beautiful one!
Activities:
To complement the other exhibitors at the event, the girls voted to have four stations with tie-ins to other Dinosaur Ridge Badge Requirements:
Teach camping songs (GS Way 1)
SWAPS-making station with a bugs theme (Bugs 2/GS Way 5)
Learn about 5 CO native bugs and make a take-home bug poster (Bugs 1/Outdoor Skills 3)
Celebrate Juliette Gordon Low by making birthday cards (GS Way 2)
I. Camping Songs
Eliza gets the prize as the most enthusiastic song starter. Other eager singers included Iris, Analise, and Josephine.
Find links to song videos and revised song sheets here.
A concerned mother alerted us that one of our call-and-response songs was insensitive toward her deaf daughter. We apologized for any harm felt as that was not our intent. We changed the closing line.
II. SWAPS - “Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere”
Unfortunately, the folks from the Butterfly Pavilion canceled at the last minute so our tie-in to their booth was less obvious. But our bug-themed SWAPS station was still a hit.
Special thanks to Mona and Iris for preparing an informative and fun craft!
III. Bug Posters
Although I had printed factsheets on a variety of bugs from the CSU Extension website, everyone just wanted to do posters of butterflies.
IV. Birthday Cards for Juliette Gordon Low
The birthday card-making station was popular. Thanks to Meredith and Mila for putting together a poster with fun facts about GS founder Juliette Gordon Low along with other posters detailing all the girls’ outdoor badge work.
Badge Requirements:
Take Action Badge
4. Girls do their Take Action project - Girls voted on their favorite activities to teach scouts at the Dinosaur Ridge event. They enthusiastically set up, worked, and broke down their booth. They educated and inspired other scouts attending the event.
Girl Scout Way Badge
1. Sing everywhere - Girls were enthusiastic about teaching their favorite camping songs.
2. Celebrate Juliette Low's birthday (10/31) - Girls cut out all the pictures, made samples, and helped scouts make Juliette Gordon Low-themed birthday cards.
3. Share sisterhood - Girls shared their Girl Scout spirit with all the event attendees!
5. Enjoy Girl Scout traditions - Girls helped other scouts make bug-themed SWAPS and exchanged them with the camping-themed ones they made on their overnight camping trip.
Bugs Badge
1. Draw a bug poster - Girls helped other scouts make a take-home bug poster.
2. Try a bug craft - Girls helped other scouts make bug-themed SWAPS.
GSCO Outdoor Skills Patch - Novice Patch
3. Identify 5 Colorado bugs or mammals - Girls taught about the body part of bugs through the SWAPS station. Visitors could read about a variety of CO-native bugs and choose one for a take-home bugs poster.
Family Follow-Up:
Please respond to the survey about what to do for the Pets badge on 11/20 or 11/21. So far there’s a tie. Need someone to break it!
Note the changes to the spring session schedule. I moved some things around so that we can end the troop year before the Memorial Day weekend holiday and end-of-school craziness.
When you receive your ballot at home, start talking with your girl about the importance of voting. Make your voting plan!
